“ChikkSlayer69” and other profile names men should avoid

In the online dating world it takes only 3 seconds to make that all-important first impression: read name, read tagline, look at picture, next! With a standard search throwing hundreds of results into the screen of a potential mate, competition is tough, and you need every little advantage to get those single girls to click and get to know you better.

If you are a man looking to find love online, you should at least know that the female mind is vastly different from the male mind. This should go without saying, but many men out there in the online dating market are clearly not thinking about their target audience when they choose their profile name. Take the real screen names “assassin” and “badboy0939” – do you really think a girl will click to get to know the assassin in you, and maybe go out on a few dates? She might as well click on “daterapist15” or “cereal_killa” if they were around. Put away your hockey mask and chainsaw, with a better name and some luck you will attract girls, not scare them.

If you have a sparkling sense of humor, you want to let it show – after all, women say they love a man with a GSOH. Short, hairy and funny is the way to go, look how well Robin Williams did! All right, all you SNL fans, please put your rubber chicken away for a minute and think: just as you would not do a pratfall for your entrance in a blind date (because you wouldn’t, right?) you may also want to save the chuckles for a little while. I’m sure “DIVEBUM12” is a right hoot, because I cannot imagine any other reasons for choosing that profile name. I can almost see him at the computer: “Wouldn’t it be great if I called myself dive bum? The chicks will think I’m a dive bum! That’s hilarious! I kill myself!” Think, men, think: the day a woman actively chooses to date a bum, hell will freeze over. Even better: this user was DIVEBUM12. Does this mean that eleven others had already come up with this name? If you’re going to try to be funny then at least be original. And funny.

Gentlemen, many of you think you are amazing in the sack – and for a few it might even be true – but are you sure that is how you want to introduce yourself? Isn’t it a little too… Austin Powers? Profile names like “wildandsensual”, “Juicygrooves”, “Latinmale_hot” and “Hotbod123” (all real, by the way) are the online equivalent of stuffing a sock into your very tight pants and wearing your shirt half unbuttoned… and they will earn you the online equivalent of Mace or a Tazer. Remember, being a sexpest is actually not very sexy.

Some online dating men are cleverer, and they aim to appear sweet, cuddly and adorable – most women love teddy bears, don’t they? Names like “letmebtheone”, “Charming0ne”, “1goodmanhere”, and “best_man_here” (do we sense some competition there?) really speak to the more romantic minded girls, and are highly likely to get some responses from ladies in search of a meaningful relationship. But some take it too far: “kissyourfeet” (real profile name!) appears as either a foot fetishist or a really submissive man. He’s bound to get clicks from interesting women, though I wonder if they are what he had in mind.

The bottom line here is simple: don’t go to extremes. If you’re funny, be funny and if you’re sexy, be sexy – just don’t go over the top. If you play your cards right you will end up getting dates instead of online restraining orders.
