Be Your Best Music Part 1

It is important to understand how you are coming across to fellow online daters.

Here’s one way to do it:

Think of a song which you relate to – either something you feel represents you or what you want to be. Better yet, answer this question:

“The person I would most want to be in the world is at what concert?”

Let’s look at your answers and how to best incorporate them into your online dating life:

Country Band

If you thought of a performer like Garth Brooks, Clint Black or Carrie Underwood then this is your recipe for cooking up a stronger online dating persona:

Qualities to Incorporate: When you hear a great country song you are usually struck with a sense of great personal authenticity – this is someone’s story plain and simple. Look for pictures of yourself which appear humble yet confident and answer your profile questions in straight forward, un-sarcastic statements.

Qualities to Avoid: The bad country song joke goes something like this: If you were to play a bad country song in reverse you would get back your car, your girlfriend, your dog, your bourbon, etc, etc. Make sure to avoid whininess and emotional gushing. Talk about what you want, not what you want to avoid.

Popular Classic Rock Band

This is for those of you who selected a band like the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith or U2.

Qualities to Incorporate: At their best, these bands create sounds which are melodious, playful and self-assured. This translates to an eclectic photo selection on your profile: a goofy face picture, a soulful portrait and a partying with friends shot will combine to echo a Popular Classic Rock photo album.

Qualities to Avoid: At their worst, they are pretentious and uninspired. Avoid putting yourself on a pedestal in your profile. Also avoid bandying about judgment of potential mates in an effort to describe what you are looking for. Don’t be a skeezy old man either.

Broadway Musical

Here’s how to bring Rent into your home page without becoming a joke:

Qualities to Incorporate: A great musical is invigorating and stirring. It will as easily bring a tear to your eye as a tap to your toe. Likewise, you want a strong sense of fun and activity in your profile. Look for pictures of yourself exerting yourself physically and pick one or two essay questions to respond at length to.

Qualities to Avoid: The cheeseball is the danger. At its worst, the musical is just too much: too much plot, too much costuming, too much emotion. Beware the appearance of rambling by answering only a few essay questions at length and shy away from overly dramatic pictures of yourself.
