Popular Date Ideas

Coming up with good date ideas can be difficult because people place so many expectations on themselves when planning dates – especially the first date. In any case, it can still be a challenge to come up with good date ideas. But fear not my friends, we have a solid list of some of the most popular date ideas right here.

1. Ice Cream or Coffee

This is an especially popular idea for the first date. Ice cream and coffee are both simple, cheap and relatively free of awkwardness. A coffee or ice cream date lets you get to know the other person without the awkwardness of a dark movie theater or expense of a fancy restaurant. Use this date to get to know the other person without placing a lot of expectations on the actual date itself.

The ice cream or coffee date also works well because it involves minimal time commitment, which places less pressure on both people. If the date doesn’t go well, you can rest at ease knowing it’s not a long commitment. This knowledge alone goes a long ways in putting both people at ease and creating a relaxed atmosphere.

2. Drinks after work

You have to be careful when planning this date idea because you don’t want to come across as a horn dog looking to get your date drunk. But if you mention it casually and take your date to a nice bar or tavern, drinks can be a great date idea. The alcohol acts as great social lubricant while the bustling environment of the bar can provide for much-needed distraction and/or interesting conversation starters.

But remember the following at all costs: Do not get drunk.

3. Dinner and a movie

Dinner and a movie is best reserved for after you are comfortable enough with your date to sit in a dark theater for two hours. If you’re unsure of whether or not you should hold your date’s hand during the movie, hold off on this date idea. Once you’ve reached a stage of relative comfort, though, this is a classic date idea that rarely disappoints.

4. Comedy Club and/or drinks

This has always been one of my default date ideas for early in a relationship. A comedy club is an awesome date idea because it is a relaxed atmosphere, it makes your date laugh and it eases some of the pressure off both of you. The drinks that come during the show also help ease some of the tension. After the comedy club, you both have plenty to talk about and a general sense of comfort with each other. You also have the option to grab drinks before or after the comedy club, depending on how long your date is comfortable with the date lasting.

5. Cook dinner together at one of your places

This is not a good first date idea, but it works great during the budding stages of a relationship. Tell your partner that you would like to cook dinner for him or her. Invite your date over to your house (only after you trust each other) and try a new recipe together. You can either go shopping first and have everything ready to go (impressive) or visit the grocery store together (cute).

A Final Piece of Dating Advice

Any time you ask your partner out on a date, it is up to you to have the date idea. Do not ask your partner out and then ask him/her what they feel like doing. If you ask for the date, it’s up to you to come up with the plan.

Make sure you have the entire date planned out in advance so that you don’t get stuck in the middle of the date with no idea of what to do next. You should remain flexible (as in don’t be a clock Nazi), but still have the entire date figured out. It also helps to have a backup plan in case the place you intended on going is closed or whatever.
