Start a great relationship with eHarmony

Summary:
eHarmony, with its unique scientific approach to online dating, has been around for more than 10 years and boasts over 20 million users in 191 countries. Its patented “Compatibility Matching System®” analyzes each user’s personality and matches them with similar users for an optimal chance of relationship success.

Pros:
- it is one of the oldest, most reputable sites
- you can get a lot of information on your potential matches

Cons:
- it takes a lot of work to set up a profile
- it is comparatively pricey
- you are not allowed to search/browse on your own

Costs:
Free membership gives you access to a long and thorough questionnaire; after you answer it you get a long (and mostly flattering) 5-way analysis of your personality. You have immediate access to your potential matches, but cannot see their pictures or communicate unless you subscribe. Subscribers can proceed to the 4-step guided communication process, in which contact information is shielded until both parties are ready to share it. Subscription can cost as little as $19.95 a month on the 12-month plan, or as much as $59.95 for a single month.

Account Setup: Complicated
Time it took to set up an account/profile: 40 minutes, but we whizzed through it – this could take up to an hour for someone willing to go into serious introspection. There were pages after pages of boxes to tick and a few short essay questions. After the profile is set you still get to fill out more information and choose 10 “must haves” and 10 “can’t stands,” so be ready to spend an hour in total.

Photos:
You are allowed up to 12 pictures. Uploading could not be easier, photos are online immediately, and you can zoom in for a larger view. You can also add captions to your pictures.

Search:
There is no search feature – you only get to see people whose profile matches yours. While this can be annoying to some, it follows on eHarmony’s biggest selling point: their scientific matching system.

Support:
eHarmony has a very thorough, indexed and searchable FAQ, as well as the option to email your question to the support team.

In their words:
eHarmony’s singles matching service presents users with compatible matches based on key dimensions of personality that are scientifically proven to predict happier, healthier long-term relationships. Our compatibility matching models are based on 35 years of clinical experience and rigorous scientific research into which characteristics between spouses are consistently associated with the most successful relationships.

Our reviewer’s opinion:
This site seems ideal for someone looking for a serious, committed relationship or even marriage – the thorough vetting and matching process gives the impression that it could work really well. However, the amount of time (and money) required of eHarmony mean it is not the best place for those looking for a date or something more casual.

Loved the personality profiling, and got some good matches, but I still find the site rather expensive - might be worth it if I find the love of my life, though! :)
