Being in love in a tropical paradise is about as good as life gets.
This is why the one thing that almost every couple tries to do is find time to vacation together. Get away from the jobs, the phone calls, the house, (the kids!) and melt into blissful oblivion in a new place – this appeals to just about all of us.
Of course, Cancun ain’t free.
Here’s how to get away without blowing your wad.
Camping: The best way to cut down on vacation overhead is to cut it out altogether (well, almost.) A camping trip can be a fantastic sojourn even for the citiest of city folk. Obviously if you’ve got a tent and know what you’re doing then go ahead and get it done. But if you’re not too naturally inclined, don’t follow the Survivorman style. Find an interesting spot within driving distance and rent a van for a few days. Not only are you going to fill up your van with your supplies, but with pillows, blankets and sleeping gear to boot. All you and your significant other have to do is make it to your spot and explore – no setting up required as you will be sleeping in your van. Not only does it cut down on set-up time, it protects you from weather better than any tent in the history of mankind.
A Hotel Room: Don’t confuse “getting away” with “international travel.” Sometimes a night or two in a local hotel is exactly what the doctor ordered. No clean up, you already know the area and if something should come up back at home, you’ll be right there to get on top of it. A local hotel room can be all the vacation you needed, all for the cost of a nice dinner.
Conferences and Classes: Your employer can do more than pay you – they can use you as a tax write-off. Many companies are able to foot the bill for their employees to take special classes which will help their job performance. So the next time your boss is in a good mood, see if they’re open to the idea of your taking a little trip somewhere to better yourself.
As much as you may feel like it at times, you are not a machine. You too, need rest. Getting away with your loved one (yes, ‘loved one’ rather than ‘loved ones;’ not only is it almost always cheaper to drop the kids off with a relative for the weekend, but you’ll be able to relax more without your offspring around) is eminently doable at virtually any price. Take some time, plan it out and take off – you’ll be glad you did.
