Get Drunk/Stay Sober – Alcohol on Dates

It provokes and unprovokes… it provokes the desire but takes away the performance –

- William Shakespeare from “MacBeth”

You have three choices.

When it comes to drinking alcohol out on dates, you have three basic choices. Here they are and here are the pros and cons of each:

Stay Sober

Drinking not a drop out on a date is a great way to maintain your entire consciousness (and save money!) Of course, no one likes to drink alone and if your date is a drinker or even someone who enjoys the occasional glass of wine, they may feel put off by your decision. Of course, if your date is a serious drinker then you may be putting off someone that you want to put off.

When making the choice to stay completely sober out on a date, be cognizant of the fact that you are making an announcement of lifestyle more than anything else. If you’re not trying to make that announcement, then be sure to let your date know that you simply are not drinking on your date for whatever reason.

Get Drunk

Getting sloshed out on a date can be a fantastic way to have fun and open up some moments of passion. On the other hand, drinks open a Pandora’s Box of emotion and sloppy humanity (and drinks can cost a bit of money as well!) Just as concerted sobriety makes a declaration of lifestyle, so too does getting drunk. Getting outright drunk says to your date that no matter what you are looking to have fun. It also suggests that you are a little wild and maybe even a little untrustworthy.

When making the choice to get wasted, make sure that you convey your desire to have fun and that getting drunk does not mean that you expect sex. Also make sure that you’ve covered the basics of safe transportation.

A Little Bit of This and That

Having a glass of wine or a beer out on a date can be a great way to enjoy a little carnal pleasure while mitigating a lot of the negative effects. Of course, moderation can be a tough bug to nail down and how often does one glass of wine lead into a second bottle?

Moderation says balance to your date. Often times the word ‘moderation’ is used as a synonym for the word ‘right.’ The danger here is in projecting a sort of modern day do-gooder image or even stepping out of your comfort zone to let your date know that it is alright for them to have a drink.

Drinking alcohol is the same as doing anything else out on a date – you have to do what is right for you. If getting drunk really is the right choice for you, then go right ahead. If you’re 12 years sober, then be OK with that. The greatest danger in any date or relationship is going against what it is that you really want to do in order to trick this other person into liking you. Be you and drink what you want, the rest is out of your control.
