His and Her MoviesBecause “Rambo” doesn’t tend to get her hot. Because “Boys on the Side” doesn’t usually get his libido moving. Because funny makes everyone happy. When searching for a movie to suffice both of your cinematic appetites, you have to walk a fine line between the masculine and the feminine. Especially at the beginning of a relationship when every decision either of you make seem magnified by the breadth of your growing emotions. Here are some movies you both may enjoy curling up on the couch with: The Princess Bride Rob Reiner’s 1987 rollicking romance comedy strikes a chord with nearly 114% of people who watch it. A beautiful rags to riches princess (Robin Wright Penn), a daring and sarcastic swashbuckler (Cary Elwes) and above all else, a brilliant script from a master screenwriter deftly walking the line between absurdity and adventure (William Goldman who also wrote “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “All the President’s Men”). This is a great one for men, women and children – even if you’ve seen it before, you two can sit and enjoy this one together. The Big Lebowski 1998 brought us the joy of Linda Tripp and Monica Lewinski, the founding of Google and “The Big Lebowski.” Ethan and Joel Coen’s tripped out identity issue masterpiece is beloved as a certifiable cult classic. But the reason it works so well as a his and her’s movie is that it is a hilarious screwball comedy, not particularly violent and a fine film from true auteurs. The General Buster Keaton was one of the first certifiable stars of film and 1927’s “The General” was his biggest success. Another comedy (picking up a pattern here?) this one set in the Civil War following one deftly bungling train engineer and his fight to save the South. Black and White and Silent, this one is not only entertaining, but it’s an interesting look back on what a blockbuster was in the pre-Depression United States. Look, everyone has different tastes and we all know plenty of older ladies that love “Terminator 2” and young men who are all about “Gone With the Wind.” It isn’t that violence and muscles dictate gendered taste – of course not! But in the beginning, when you’re not sure which way anybody’s tastes go, it’s better to play it safe. And these three movies, while “safe” are all considered to be true classics and absolutely worth your while. Try starting with one of these then moving on to the darker or more emotional side, if nothing else, you two will have a good laugh together. |
