How to catch a millionaire

There is a staggering number of sites dedicated to match the wealthy and powerful. So we set to find out: who uses these sites? How do they work? And how do you catch a millionaire?

I first heard about millionaire dating sites through a friend of mine: she told me how her boss had joined one of these sites and had fallen for a beautiful but frail young woman, whose ill health kept them from meeting face to face. It was all too predictable, a bit sad and a bit funny, and it led me to create a profile into one of these sites and find out more about millionaire dating.

The first thing I noticed is how straightforward most of these sites are, promising wealthy men that they will “Save time searching for beautiful, sophisticated women who appreciate a man of substance,” while attractive women are offered a chance to “Meet talented and successful men who’ve achieved wealth and status and are eager to share the benefits of a fabulous lifestyle with you.”

Other sites focus on talent and achievement along with wealth and beauty: “This is the first, most effective and largest site in the world to connect with, date and/or marry successful, beautiful people.
Our members include CEOs, pro athletes, doctors, lawyers, investors, entrepreneurs, beauty queens, fitness models, and Hollywood celebrities, just to name a few.” That said, they will not turn you down at the door; as one of these sites announces: “Every quality single is welcome here. You do not have to be rich or famous.” Most millionaire dating sites are very democratically priced as well, at around $35 a month for a standard membership.

If you decide to look for love into one of these elitist sites, you will want to be sure you are getting your money’s (or your beauty’s) worth instead of wasting time with posers and pretenders. This is why most millionaire dating sites have verification procedures: with a little paperwork you can get the site to verify your pictures, income and/or education, adding a little icon or checkmark so the world knows you are being honest about your looks, your wealth or your PhDs. These verifications are free, even for guest memberships, yet surprisingly few people take advantage of them: some men certify their earnings and a few women certify their pictures, but it is not even 50% of the membership who does this.

Another interesting discovery was the loose definition of “millionaire” used for dating purposes:

Q. Who is a millionaire?
A. Anyone who earns $150,000 and above annually. You do not need to have assets that total a million dollars or more per year.

While I certainly would not sniff at a six-figure annual income, it does seem a poetic license to call someone who makes $150K a year a millionaire. Still, if you are at or above this income level you are encouraged to send in your tax forms or some such accounting document confirming your assets, and most sites will highlight your profile as a “Certified millionaire,” usually with a diamond shaped icon next to your name or a different background color.

So what did we discover about millionaire dating sites? Are they for real, or are they a sham? The answer lies inside every person who becomes a member. Perhaps these sites are indeed a way for rich and powerful people with busy schedules to meet potential partners. Perhaps they are a chance for many to dream of more upscale lifestyle or a more beautiful mate. Perhaps they provide a place for benefactors and sugar babies to come together on “mutually beneficial arrangements.” Probably they do all of the above, depending on who you are and what you look for. So… what will your millionaire dating experience be?

Hi,

Most of these so-called Millionaire sites are an over-priced
scam, especially the free ones. You will mainly find men/women
with severe issues. Millionaires never advertise, and on such sites, they are too busy buying men/women.
