How to take the perfect profile photo – Part II
A good profile picture is vital to your online dating success, and now is the time to throw out your old pics and replace them with fresh ones. In the first part of this article we gave you advice for a natural pose, better-looking skin and open eyes. Read on for more tips to get the most out of your pictures.
5. Goodbye double chin: Few things are more aging and unattractive in a photo than a double chin, especially if you don’t actually have one in real life. Prevent or minimize it with two simple steps: first, make sure the camera is at your eye level or higher, so that you look at it straight ahead or tilting up. Looking down at the camera will give you a double chin even if you do not have one. Second, project your face out an inch or two, as if you were a giraffe. You may feel awkward – let’s be honest, you WILL feel awkward – but your neck will look longer and thinner in the photo.
6. Find your best angle: Look at any celebrity’s picture and you will realize hardly any of them looks squarely at the photographer; most prefer to show two thirds of their faces (or even less) by turning slightly away from the camera. This nifty little trick has two immediate effects: it will help hide any asymmetry in your face, and it will also create a slimmer image, since the eye travels vertically (from your forehead to your chin) instead of side-to-side.
7. A bright smile: Your teeth are nicely white and well taken care of, right? You visit your dentist at least once a year? Good. A quick treatment with some off-the-counter whitening strips might be a good idea before you take your pictures; you can also go for the old home remedy of gently brushing them with a little baking soda to remove superficial stains. Ladies can get an increased whitening effect by wearing red or dark lipstick, but only do this if you are used to it and it suits your skin color, otherwise you’ll just look like you were playing with mommy’s makeup kit.
8. Do like the professionals do: A little-known secret of beauty queens and models is not to look directly at the camera lens, but slightly above it or past it, or even over the photographer’s shoulder and a little into the distance. This will prevent the “yearbook look” and make you look more interesting. Also, don’t be afraid to let your personality show: a crooked smile, a raised eyebrow, a flash of dimples will all go a long way to showcase you in the most flattering light.
Have fun taking your pictures, we hope they bring you many new and exciting dates!
