JDate now features Keyword Search

It seems that Jewish dating site JDate.com has been making a lot of news lately with their innovative approach to online dating. A few weeks ago we were reporting on their matchmaking flight to Australia, and today they are on the headlines again with an exciting addition to their software: Keyword Search.

Our reviewers have tested the Keyword search on other sites and applications (Flirt 140 comes to mind) and have found it very useful for finding compatible matches: after all, there are thousands of women aged 20-28 with a university degree who don’t smoke; but significantly fewer will have all the keywords “basketball, dark chocolate, tolstoi, beagles” in their profile, thus narrowing your choice on one hand AND exposing you to people who may be very compatible even if they don’t fit one of your original criteria.

The new feature is introduced as a Beta into the JDate website, and even though it must have taken quite a few hours of programming brainpower it is presented with a very simple approach: “Looking for JDaters who like a certain band, work in a specific profession or enjoy particular types of films or food? Simply enter a term or phrase in the Keyword Search and see who has those words in their profile!”

The instructions for using the keyword search are simple and to the point:

  • Think about qualities you are looking for in a date (e.g. smart, likes dogs)
  • Type a quality in the “Looking for” box
  • If you like, narrow your search by location or age

We did in fact follow the steps using the keywords “intellectual, opera, gourmet, witty”, narrowing the search to men in their 30s. We did not have very high expectations, and yet we found two very good matches. This bodes well for people who are into rock climbing and Japanese food, or those who love horses and black and white cinema. Whatever your combination of interests and qualities, there is a good chance that you will find someone who shares them – and that is what online dating is all about.
