Summary:
JDate, “the leading Jewish singles network”, was established in 1997 as the first site of the Spark network. JDate boasts between 12,000 - 13,000 members logged in at any given time. A unique feature of JDate is that they also organize speed-dating parties and trips for members.
Pros:
- The software is very complete and easy to use.
- The meetings and events are a big plus
Cons:
- Pictures cannot be made larger than 2”x2”
- The software design is plain and boring – time for a revamp!
Costs:
You can set up a profile, browse and search to your heart’s content, but if you want to communicate with an attractive match you must become a full member. There are two membership levels: standard, which includes all messaging, chat and video; and premium, which allows you to stand out in searches and line-ups with a member spotlight and a highlighted profile. Standard membership starts at $24.99 a month (in the 6 month package) and goes up to $39.99 for a single month. Premium plans cost $30.99 if you pay for 6 months at once and $49.99 if you register for just one. Subsequent renewals are discounted when you subscribe for more then one month.
Creating account: Easy
Creating a JDate account took about 15 minutes from start to finish, including pictures. You are required to write one short essay about yourself, and are also given the option to write a few shorter ones about your ideas on relationships. The system is the usual check-box scheme for personal info, interests, and your ideal match.
Photos:
You can upload up to 4 pictures at once, and they are approved within minutes. When you view someone’s profile, each of the 4 pictures is linked to a section in the profile: Basics, Lifestyle, Interests and Relationship. Pictures don’t show a lot bigger than 2”x2” or 3”x2”.
Search:
You can save a profile for a quick search, with as many options as you like. Searches return a good variety of quality matches: the test searches we ran threw upwards of 100 results.
Support:
If you have any trouble using JDate you are welcome to phone in from the USA or the UK, or to use the email form on the site. Email is supposed to be answered within 24 hours, but we got an answer in just a few minutes. That said, it was a canned answer that didn’t quite answer the question.
In their words:
“We’re very proud of our members: smart, attractive, successful people from all walks of life, all professions and all ages, living life to its fullest. They’re all looking to connect, network and find romance! JDate has hundreds of thousands of members worldwide and is one of the few personals sites around that boasts a nearly perfect 50:50 male-to-female ratio.”
Our reviewer’s opinion:
JDate is definitely the top site for Jewish singles, both in the USA and the UK. With lots of members, many fun options like video chat and unique speed-dating events, JDate is the place to look for your Jewish better half. Highly recommended.

I know a lot of friends who have said they met people using Online sites. I decided to give it a try - selecting JDATE first -as I am Jewish. Sorry to say - no luck - and I am going to Match - as their site is much better.
Reasons:
1) The JDATE site is cumbersome to use. The Spark company seems to be more concerned about re-arranging the look and feel rather then really improving the functionality
2) You can search on many, vital attributes - such as current family status, future status, etc.
I have also found a lot of members are actually NO LONGER members - meaning they have abandoned their ID’s. Now the reviewer will not know this unless they are clairvoyent. So you could be spending a lot of money and time writing to people - who just are no longer using the site. I suppose this just makes the singles count much higher then it really is.
I also did some math on the numbers signing up and meeting mates. They don’t add up either.
In summary - use this site for a short while. If you think it is working - by all means stick with it. If not - drop it like a bad habit.
Final thought - I can not confirm - but have been told that only about 10-12% of people really meet on online sites. Not a great average really.
