Summary:
Lavalife.com, “Where singles click,” started as a classifieds service in 1987. It has since evolved into a cutting-edge multiplatform network of web, voice and mobile solutions for singles on the go. Lavalife’s online chatting system has over 1.7 million members who exchange more than 700,000 messages every day.

Pros:
- Many options to chat, email, talk and video, both online and on your mobile phone.
- “Click” magazine is fun and informative
- You can reply to emails and IMs even if you are not a paying member

Cons:
- It is confusing to navigate between “Dating”, “Relationship” and “Intimate” communities.
- If you do not disable the “Intimate” option you may get a few unpleasant surprises.

Costs:
Lavalife is one of the very few sites which allow non-paying members to reply to the messages and IMs they receive. Kudos for this! However, they lose brownie points by restricting free members from seeing entire picture galleries (even while free member’s own galleries are visible.) If you decide to buy the standard dating package ($29.99 for a single month, $18.99/month for 3 months) you will be able to view full galleries and initiate contact by mail or IM within the “Dating” and “Relationship” communities. A little more money will get you access to the “Intimate” community, where you can seek close encounters of the adult type and maintain a “backstage” set of photos for private viewing.

Account Setup: Easy
It took us 4 whole minutes to set up a basic account: info, sales pitch, picture, voila! Lavalife supports three different “communities” according to what you are looking for: casual Dating, a serous Relationship or an Intimate encounter. You can personalize your profile for each of these purposes, or even create several different profiles. Each community has its own extra set of questions, which take a few minutes to complete. You may also create a private photo gallery with restricted access for the “Intimate” section of your profile.
Note: you have the option to enable or disable any of these communities according to what you are interested in.

Photos:
You may upload up to 30 pictures, and classify them in a public or a “backstage” gallery. Remember that you will not be able to see other’s galleries unless you are a paying member. All pictures are vetted for quality and for suitability to the community they are in; nudity is allowed (with some restrictions) in the Backstage section of Intimate galleries.

Search:
There are several instant searches: local, online, with gallery, by interest, etc. You can also run a quick search by age and location, or a more detailed custom search with as many filters as you want. Our test searches threw lots of results, and many were of quite good quality.

Support:
Lavalife has a well organized help section, and you can contact support using an email form on the site if your query is not answered in the FAQ.

Our reviewer’s opinion:
This is a fantastic site for the hip and tech-savvy, who can make the most of the many interactive features. The triple-community system is pretty confusing at first, in spite of the color coded tabs and alerts; the first two messages I got were most decidedly NOT appropriate for work! Once you get a handle of this, the site is easy to use and seems an ideal place to look for casual dating or flings.
