Summary:
mysinglefriend is the revolutionary UK-based matchmaker service from mysinglefriend Inc. The idea is both unique and familiar – no one is ever alone on mysinglefriend. In order to gain an active membership, you will have to be endorsed, described and counseled by a friend who then puts you up online (hence, mysinglefriend). Very clean site, very interesting idea; while it’s only for UK based daters (England, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland) if you qualify, this is a fun one to check out.
Pros:
- Unique concept makes for a more communal experience
- Well designed graphically
- User-friendly
- It can be fun to play matchmaker and this is the first real online dating experience which caters to that
Cons:
- No A/V chat
- Only for UK daters
- Signing up is a minor headache
Costs:
Par for the course – free to sign up but if you want communicate with any other member then you will be paying. The rates are £18 for 1 month, £27 for 2 months, £34 for 3 months or £50 for 6 months. As you can’t even read emails from other members as a non-paying member, you’ll really have to pony up the dough.
Account Setup:
This is both one of the biggest downers and most exciting parts of mysinglefriend. First of all, it takes forever. Not only will you have to answer all of those stock questions (“How tall are you?” “What do you do for a living” etc, etc.) but you will have to wait for your friend to comment about you (not to mention wait for the site to authenticate their comments). If you are the matchmaker then it’s infinitely more bearable. As the single friend, it can get a little annoying to wait for the wheels to turn.
Photos:
We only found one photo slot which is quite weird. Sites of this size and design don’t tend to be so limiting, but we only found one slot.
Search:
This is another fun feature on mysinglefriend, as it is the role of the matchmaker to hunt down other members for the single friend. There’s just something fun about hunting for mates for your friends. On their own two feet, the search options are weak. You can filter through age and location, but no advanced personality tests or secondary matching options are available – I guess that’s what the matchmaker is there for.
Special Features:
The idea of the matchmaker is really the biggest special feature. Beyond that you are looking at a fair amount of site-generated content and not much else.
Communication:
Standard Facebook-style messaging and email. No A/V options and no live chat. The site’s been running for 2 years now – some of this other stuff should be around. Although what do you need A/V chat for if you’ve got Skype?
Support:
A very accessible FAQs section answers most questions. There is also a site-generated support email address and a physical address given. We couldn’t find a phone number.
In their words:
This is a totally new kind of dating site – for someone to be online at mysinglefriend®, a friend has described and recommended them as a pretty fabulous (and single!) person. This means anyone can take part, single or not. It also means that our singles are not alone - they have their friends with them every step of the way. We don’t publish anything here without the single person’s approval - so it’s a safe and fun way to try and find some decent dates! Click below on the ‘question mark’ icons to find out more…..
Our reviewer’s opinion:
What a fun time! This has got to be some of the most fun I’ve ever had reviewing a site because I was doing it for my friend. Whenever you are doing something for someone you care about, everything becomes more interesting. The site itself is very clean, easy to use and chock-full of its own content. I wish it had a little bit more going for it in the way of traditional things like secondary personality tests, more profile options and a better photo album style layout, but what it’s already got is unique and enjoyable. Another bummer that it’s only for UK daters at this point, but hey, if you or someone you know qualifies, I guarantee you’ll have fun on mysinglefriend.
