Online Dating Checklist

It’s important to be organized.

Whether we’re talking about your taxes, your medicine cabinet or your online dating life, it is important to be organized. After all, if you’re not organized then you run the risk of overlooking something.

So in the spirit of organization, here is a checklist to help you organize and maximize your online dating life:

  • What do I want?: The first and last question of online dating (or dating in general for that matter) is the all important, “what do I want?” Are you looking for a long-term companion or some body heat? Are you looking to stave off loneliness? Are you looking for a queen for your kingdom? Are you still trying to figure out what you want? Putting words to what you want is the single biggest part of a successful online dating experience. It will steer you towards the right site and it will ultimately steer you towards the right people.
  • The Picture Album: You need a few good pictures of yourself to be a successful online dater – not one, but a few. You really want several pictures of yourself so you can represent more dimensions of yourself online. Have a good portrait and a good you-in-action photo (maybe hiking or on vacation or partying – whichever is most you). Find something that tastefully shows off your body and something that shows your goofy side. Have a minimum of 4 good pictures which depict different sides of you.
  • A Webcam: This one is easy but if you are going to be an online dater then you absolutely positively must have a webcam. Not because you’re looking to put on a show but because the most important step between meeting someone online and meeting them in real life is a webchat. Get Skype, look for sites with Audio/Visual components – find ways to meet these people face to face on the internet before meeting them face to face in real life.
  • A Chill Pill: Another important part of online dating (and dating in general), is in understanding that interest does not equal suitability. Once someone has initiated contact with you it is human nature for you to want that person to fill all of the roles that you can imagine. Don’t inflict your desires upon someone – let them be who they are and see if that overlaps with what you are looking for. The worst thing you can do is keep yourself on a constant roller coaster of jubilation and abject disappointment. Take a chill pill and let it be.

Take a moment, take stock of your online dating life and make sure you’ve got all 4 boxes checked. Not that this list is going to ensure complete success and the love of your life, but it will go a long way towards helping you improve your online dating life in a very real way.
