The latest development in online dating is the mastermind of small New Zealand internet firm Pop Media and online communications giant Skype: a system that allows users to have a series of short online video-dates on Skype for free. The newly launched online speed dating service is called Skyecandy, and it promises a whole new experience to online daters, veterans and newcomers alike. All you need is a webcam, good lighting and 30 minutes to spare. The creators of Skyecandy expect it to make a big splash in the online dating pool, since it operates on Skype, which is estimated to have around 14 million users online at any time. “Speed dating nowadays is a popular thing to begin with, and this is just on an even bigger level, so I think it can go really large”, said Natasha Misic from Pop Media. How do you use Skyecandy? It’s very easy: after downloading and installing a small piece of software from Skype, you fill in a small registration form where you enter your details and those of the people you are interested in meeting. Speed dating sessions start every 6 minutes, and consist of several 5-minute video “dates” with a one-minute break afterwards for voting, rating and taking notes on your dates. After the session is over, you get to think once more before confirming your decisions, which will be matched with those of your dates so you can get your results, which will be displayed in your member web page. After this you may add successful matches to your Skype contacts to continue the conversation, and you can do it all over again as many times as you like! Just like most Skype services, Skyecandy is free of charge and available to everyone, and on top of the speed dates you will also be allowed free “cheeky notes” to communicate with your successful matches, also at no cost to you. For a small fee of $0.50 USD you can also send a Skyecandy SMS to your successful date’s mobile phone if you have not seen them in Skype for a while.
