Survive and Thrive: Online Dating in a Down Market Part 1

Ain’t much money around here.

Whether you are in Japan, Panama or Florida – ain’t much money around wherever it is that you are. That doesn’t mean you have to forget about a dating life however.

Here is a comprehensive guide to maximizing your dating dollar during this global economic meltdown:

Diversify:

There are more than 75 different online dating sites operating internationally today – the more of them that you are on, the more chance you have of finding exactly who and what it is  you want to be finding. The best way to throw out multiple hooks without cracking your bank account is to divide your funds between three sites (don’t worry, you’re not paying for all of them).

First, go after one of the big dogs – something like an eHarmony.com, or a Chemistry.com. This will be your single most expensive purchase and it will be anywhere from $110 to a $150 one-time payment for a six month thing. Then, you go to Bookofmatches.com and sign up for a second, entirely free membership.

Why is eHarmony $130 and Bookofmatches $0? Because Bookofmatches has a fraction of the total members and resources of eHarmony. Of course, there are still thousands of people looking to hook up on Bookofmatches (and you can play the original Arcade version of Pac-Man) and it’s entirely free.

Give those two sites a month or two to see if you can find who or what it is that are looking for. If you’re still hungry for more, begin a series of one-month memberships to a so-called Z-specific site.

A Z-specific site is a site like Asian Singles Connection or BlackSingles.com, which caters to a specific audience. Take a look at the directory of reviews we’ve got here and join any one you qualify for.

Per Month Total:
$40

Swap Meets:

Swap meets are like giant garage sales – who doesn’t like a garage sale? If and when it comes to selecting a first date activity, look for your nearest swap meet.

First and foremost, you’re able to walk around and talk with your date. Also, with the bevy of interesting products and stands surrounding you, you’ll be able to exit any bit of awkward conversation with a smartly timed perusal.

To top it all off, all of that walking around means cheap but delicious finger foods. Where else are you going to get 2 hot dogs, a lamp and a Zeppelin vinyl for less than $30?

Per Date Total:
$30, if you’re paying
