The Most Embarrassing Date Situations (And How to Deal with Them) – Part 1

The only thing worse than someone laughing in your face, is someone too embarrassed for you to even make a noise.

From spinach in your teeth to ex-lovers popping up unexpectedly, here is a look at the most embarrassing things that can happen to you on a date (and how to deal with them).

Run-In With an Angry Ex

The restaurant is sleepy and romantic… the food smells rich but crisp… the waiters are snooty but attentive… and then you see her. No, it can’t be. But it is.

Your ex-girlfriend is walking straight at you and she does not look pleased. All of the awful things you’ve said and done go running through your head and your thoughts are, to say the least, scattered. What to do?

  • Stand Up: First and foremost, get yourself in a physical position to deal with whatever may be coming at you. Head it off at the pass – the last thing you want to happen is to be stuck in a sitting position while your ex comes headlong with a glass of red wine at you. Whether it’s an ex boyfriend or girlfriend coming at you – stand up and be prepared.
  • Polite, Not Annoying: The impulse will probably be to smile as wide as possible and welcome their arrival with sugary sweet happiness. “Oh, Marty – it’s so wooonderful to see you!” No it isn’t, it sucks and they are amongst the last 5 people in the world that you wanted to see. Stand up, smile politely and introduce them to your date. No more, no less.
  • Don’t Be Defensive, Be a Tattle Tale: Your ex is either coming over to innocently say hello… or to fight with you. The former goal is not a big issue but the latter could certainly be a problem. Remember that it takes two to tango; just let them say whatever they have to say, ask them to leave because now is not the time to discuss this and then call over the waiter. They will escort them out.
  • No White Elephants: Relationships are essentially about connecting with another person and going through life. Necessarily, life shapes every relationship… well life just shaped your relationship. Once your ex is gone, take the time to directly discuss what just happened and why it happened to your date. Make sure to take some responsibility and apologize. Then ask if they’d like to change venues. While it would be nice to say “Don’t let them ruin your date” they may have already ruined your date. Don’t dig yourself a deeper grave – if the night out is over, let it be over, regroup and see if they are open to another night out.
