Things to Do on a First Date
Just don’t go to a movie.
Of all the activities that you can choose to engage in your very first date together, please don’t go to a movie. You’re trapped in a room for 2+ hours sitting silently next to someone you barely know… thinking. You’re aware of your hands, their reaction to the movie, your reaction to the movie – everything but getting to know this other person whom you have chosen to date.
Here are some more functional activities than sitting darkness staring for your first date; things you can do both to share a good time and learn about your new friend.
- Minor League Baseball Game: There is no better place to be than at a ballgame. Rather than subject yourselves to the hubbub (and prices) of a major league game, check out your neighborhood Double A affiliate. You’ll be able to talk to each other during the game and when the conversation dies down, you’ll be able to focus on the play for a little while (and things are cheap.) There’s a wonderful sort of quirky vibe at most minor league stadiums too, this tends to grow a sense of togetherness and community in the crowd. Togetherness, community, affordable… perfect Minor League First Date!
- Cool Coffee House: The one by my house is called Viento y Agua, and I guarantee you that there is one near your house. It’s a cliché for a reason, getting a cup of coffee is a great first date. It’s cheap, relatively commitment-free (because its duration can be as short as drinking a cup of coffee or as long as… well, the right date can last a lifetime) and a great way to stimulate conversation (remember that getting to know each other is the chief goal of the first date.) But don’t take your date to Starbucks; find that cool little artsy coffee house that is near your house.
- Swap Meet: Ah yes, the beauty of the swap meet. Wandering through the swap meet, drifting between conversations and sudden bursts of impulse buying is as wonderful a way to get to know someone as any. This is even a terrific way to impress your date with a thoughtful (yet inexpensive) memento from your first day out together. If you can’t find a swap meet near your area, you can also check out a farmer’s market for a relatively similar experience.
There are just three ideas, but there are plenty more. The idea is to get to know each other during the first date. And while there are plenty of places to get this done, remember that this is as much an attitude as it is an environment.
