What Movie is your Love Life? - Part 1

You are what you are and that is unique.

But in our never-ending quest for love and companionship, many of us fall into the same age old patterns that millions upon millions of others have since Adam’s Rib grew a mind of its own.

We’ve done this before with music now let’s try it with the movies:

Think of a movie which you relate to. It can be a movie which you think tells the story of your life, a movie that you love, a movie that reminds you of a memory – whatever, just think of a movie that you relate to.

Got it?

Let’s look at some answers:

Old World Drama

If you thought of a movie like “Howard’s End” or “Sense and Sensibility” then this is the script you should be looking to follow in your dating cinema:

Qualities to Incorporate: A good Elizabethan flick is a lush, emotional feast. It takes care to look good and to be appropriately dramatic. Families are very important in old world dramas. Look to be open with your love and grow your relationship inside of a community/large family.

Qualities to Avoid: A bad bit of olde England comes across as stilted, melodramatic and tiresome. Don’t get too caught up in “proper behavior” or constant emotional roller coasters.

Recent Period Drama

If you went more for a dramatic movie that takes place in the past but in the last century like “Titanic” or “A Beautiful Mind” then here are your liner notes:

Qualities to Incorporate: Like it’s cousin, the very old drama, recent period pieces tend to follow the same do’s. Dramatic in bursts, nice to look at and mindful of history. Be sure to stay aware of the links between your past and your present.

Qualities to Avoid: Be wary of all the olde English issues, but add to it a common trap in period dramas: an over-attention to the details of historical accuracy at the expense of compelling stories. Don’t be cold with your love.

Crime Epic

If nothing gets you into your own skin more than “The Godfather” or “Goodfellas” then here is your direction:

Qualities to Incorporate: A great crime epic seems to look at life full in the face, from its seedy underbelly to the importance of family. Be responsible in a worldly sense and stand up for the truth, no matter how grim it may be.

Qualities to Avoid: Bad crime movies curse too much, go on too long and imitate toughness rather than inhabit it. The f word is not that same as strength. Hardness is not the same as responsibility.
